Mabon

I was unable to bring my celebration of Mabon into one place, or one time. So this is a bit of a buffet. Or a balance.

A buffet to celebrate the harvest bounty and the changing season – our trees have already started to go “dull”. The expectation is for a muted foliage season due to the dryness we had all summer. Apparently trees need water too.

The balance is for the solstice. I am balancing my desire to honor Mabon, and the Wheel of the Year, with my desire to be focused in the time I spend with others. So Mabon got thread into some other things.

I continue to value a cause for thanks giving every six weeks.

Yesterday Ty and I learned about making soft pretzels. Some excellent practical mathematics, applied chemistry, and just plain fun trying to roll dough, shape a pretzel, dip in boiling sodium bicarbonate-water, egg wash, salt, bake, and have the finished product resemble a pretzel. Visual success. And tasted great!

Bonus points for using grain, yeast, and eggs in Mabon thanks for our perhaps unpredictable, but nutritionally sufficient food supply.

As further acknowledgement, but back at the condo, local Maine black pigeon and white navy beans, molasses, and assorted peppers, of course topped with cheese. And some hard boiled eggs. Living large.

Not so local, but who doesn’t like a good Chianti? I know, I paired with the wrong beans. Of note, the placard on the wall is all Janelle. It is the only time in our marriage that I ever remember there being no discussion of what went up on the walls. This showed up one day in the post, without notice. I was told, “Yup, I ordered that. Please make a place for it.” Which I quickly did. In a prime location. And I now love that memory.

I realize the vegetable large intestine is a little jarring. But after my recent surgery, I was drawn to this and the message in the article linked below. Short story – all the little bugs living in your gut thrive on a variety of vegetable products. Be diverse in your grazing!

The season – the band – the song – I don’t know. All of the above. Please enjoy Little Stevie Winwood. I think he would have been 22 for this, and already eight years in the business.
