Mabon in Honolulu

I’m surprised how long it has been since I’ve posted. It isn’t that there has been nothing going on. But more that it has been busy. I left Arkansas on August 31st (more on that below) and by the time I landed at home, I was making plans to head out to Hawaii. Long days here and six days a week. I almost missed Mabon. Very glad I remembered – I still find it restorative to take a moment to sit, remember, and be thankful every six weeks.

There hasn’t been any time to learn the neighborhood, but Hawaii has no need to worry about first impressions. The office I have been working out of is located in Honolulu.

But before Hawaii, there was Arkansas. I did get to check off three song cities – Little Rock, Eldorado, and Texarkana. Also a trip East to Memphis, a trip West to Mena, and a trip Northwest, up into the Ozarks.

While in the Ozarks, I went to Bentonville, home of Walmart’s HQ. Also home of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. A wonderful collection, but I couldn’t escape thoughts of the Gilded Age, the Carnegies, Rockefellers, et al.

Included in the collection was this, in my opinion, rather odd painting referencing Madawaska, Maine. For those of you not familiar with Maine, Madawaska is right at the top of the state. Its major industry is a paper mill that is fed by a pulp mill right over the border in Canada. The pulp is fed through a pipe across the rive, and the international border.

Arkansas was hot, hot, hot in August. Even the dragonflies needed to chill.

And we’ll close out just remembering the Little Rock has a history. This memorial to the Little Rock Nine is on the grounds of the State capitol.

La Petite Roche

Speaking for myself, an Englishman, I forget/ignore that the French and the Spanish had significant interests in North America. Having recently spent time in New Mexico, and Canada, makes it harder to be oblivious. And so, it was fun to find this plaque to La Petite Roche.

And I continue my exposure to Arkansas tomatoes. This is a wonderful BLT at Lost Forty Brewery. It did not go down with out a beverage. Several.

The Rockhound IPA appealed to me by name. The flavor was fine as well. I have learned that Arkansas is reknowned for quartz crystals. I’ll be on the lookout for a souvenir in the wild.

I’m actively exploring options for food and drink in La Petite Roche. Fat Jaws is great soul for lunch and close to work. Fassler Hall had a great brat. I am most pleased with Sticky Fingerz – lowest rent joint of all my dinner choices. And Janelle would have been so pleased with the vibe, the food, and the beverages. For my first visit, I went with the “Almost Famous Quesadilla” and the Banana Pudding.

Through all of this, a respect for the weather is important. Not only is it HOT – it is raining. I’ve never seen horizontal lightening.

I’ve been to Little Rock…

Another Song-City checked off.

Flew into Little Rock on Monday night for what looks like a sixty day visit. Staying downtown on the river. Population of about 200k so some options for food and drink. Picked Copper Grill to start. Got some great recommendations to pursue while here.

I was told by the local sitting next to me that Arkansas is famous for its tomatoes. And they are in season. The bartender pitched in with a recommendation for an off-menu Caprese salad. They weren’t wrong, delicious! It seemed appropriate to round things out with a carrot cake and a scotch.
