Sault Ste. Marie

Pronounced “Soo” Saint Marie. Because. This is the home of the Soo Locks where ore carriers transit off of Gitche Gumi (Lake Superior) into the lower Great Lakes. A twenty-one foot difference in elevation. I was fortunate to be there when the M/V Mesabi Miner entered the locks headed back into Superior. That’s the bow of the ship on the left. And on the right is the stern. One thousand and four feet long. 16,000 horsepower and carrying capacity of 63,300 gross tons.

That’s about the whole story on Sault Ste. Marie. I’m in Escanaba tonight trying to decide on tomorrow’s itinerary. I’ll let Gordon close things out. Well – one more bridge picture too.

    1. Up state Michigan reminds me a lot of up state Maine. For better and worse. I wouldn’t recommend Sault Ste. Marie in December, though I had the whole park to myself. Literally. Except for the guard at the gate, because it is critical infrastructure, there were no visitors and no staff.
