Acclimating

It takes a while to get settled in any new city. I think I’ve made some progress. I know the bus route to and from work (Bus 20 or 42). I also bought a bicycle and am peddling the 4 miles each way most days. Waikiki is absolutely gorgeous when I am aware of my surroundings. It clearly warrants the crowds of tourists here.

I am currently working six 12 hour days a week. That makes it hard to appreciate the surroundings. I did drive across Oahu last weekend to get caught up on some vaccines. I think Hawaii outside of waikiki will be more to my liking, when work allows.

I have been exploring the local cuisine. Bad news first – I’ve become enamored of Spam and Egg musubi as seen on the left below. 60 g of carbs, 6 g of fat, and 8 g of protein. Surprisingly only 280 mg of sodium. The noodles are from Marugame Udon with its 12,718 Yelp reviews. No place I’d ever heard of, but driving by on the bus after work there is always a very, very long line. So when I walked by Saturday afternoon and there was no line, I ducked in. Delicious. But not standing in line for an hour good. I can get by with the musubi from the ABC stores that are more frequent than Dunkin’ in New England.

I did go to the Honolulu Zoo. The only zoo in the US that originated on a king’s grant of land. I found the animal enclosures a little old school. But the grounds are beautiful. And the animals help to place one within the web of life.

Tomorrow is a federal holiday. Not surprisingly, Hawaii does not celebrate Columbus Day. In to work I go…

  1. It looks like you’re beginning to see why I’d consider sleeping in a tent for Hawaii. I hope you have a chance to get out of town soon. Better yet, fly over to the big island and check out the volcano. I can recommend a fabulous Airbnb in the town of Volcano if you should happen to be able to go. Live aloha, Vern!
