Belfast, Ireland

I moved from the Republic of Ireland and crossed into Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. I took the train from Dublin to Belfast, where I spent almost 24 hours.

I enjoyed the wall art I saw while walking around Belfast. There is quite a mix of older building and small streets, right next to what seems like a massive building projects modernizing whole sections of town.

One of those project areas is the Titanic Quarter. At one time Belfast was one of the largest shipbuilders in the world. The former ship building area has multiple large residential and retail buildings recently erected, or in progress. All anchored by Titanic Belfast, a museum dedicated to the construction and destruction of the Titanic, which was built in Belfast. According to the museum, while the primary cause of the sinking was excessive speed, a contributing cause was that they left the lookout’s binoculars in port and he had rely on an unmagnified view – on a ship that took a mile to stop.

I had all around decent food and drink. An ale at the Dirty Onion and dinner with dessert at the Crown Liquor Saloon “an outstanding example of a Victorian gin palace”.

If I’d planned better, I could have taken the train to Bangor, though I’m pretty sure that isn’t the one in the song.
